Comments:
Thanks to Dave, K1TTT, for the use of his fine station. The weather only
interrupted once for 30 minutes.
I didn't think conditions were any better than fair. We got a surprise 10M opening Sunday morning from 1200-1400Z; while I stayed there CQing for about an
hour, it only produced 51 Qs. 15M was always work, closing early on Sat but staying opening much longer on Sunday. Signals on 15M were fair, but not enough stations seemed to be there. Low bands were fairly good Sat, ok on Sun,
and local QRN was too high Sun eve to tell then.
I was only able to operate 33 hours; took all my off time during the two nights then lost 3 hours Sunday afternoon due to thunderstorms. Actually lost more than that, as condx were so noisy before and after the thunderstorms that rate
dropped due to fill requests.
Great job by K1DG and NN3W.
Thanks to the DARC, and thanks for the all the Qs.
Propagation non-existant on 15 & 10M. Other than a PY that called in on 15, the other QSOs on the two bands were locals. Basically, another 20/40M contest, with a dollop of 80M thrown in. Good participation from the YOs; they always
seemed to be calling.
Thanks to the sponsors for a 24 hour workout, and to everyone for the Qs.
Another fun radio weekend using K1TTT's big antennas!
Had nice runs to JA each morning, and a nice 40M run to JA Sunday morning. Thanks to stations worked on 4-bands: TC3D, 4Z5MU Thanks to stations worked on 3-bands: A71EM, JA3YBK, JG1ZUY
Used Skimmer on an untuned 40ft longwire; if used on the band I was transmitting on, the SDR would overload and there would be garbage output. Still, Skimmer found 10 stations that I was able to work prior to them being
spotted on packet or me finding them S&P.
Thanks to the organizers for another fun contest, and thanks to everyone for the Qs.
20M was the proverbial bottomless pit. MUF dropped below 7MHz both nights by 0300Z; after that, it was strictly a 80M affair. SO2R skills were minimized by
the band conditions- most of the 48hours, there was only one band to choose from based on propagation to Europe. 15M openings were a tease; I did spend an hour there Sunday morning, but, other than working mults, it wasn't worth the time.
Great score by K1DG. K1ZM, K1lZ, and KD4D also had big scores. Thanks to DARC and the organizers, to K1TTT for allowing me the use of his KB station, and to the ops for the QSOs!

What a crazy weekend.... a perfect way to top off a crazy month This month
found me modifying and repairing amps, something I hate to do. It found me
on a tower on top of a high school sealing their fm station antenna to stop
the rain from taking them down. I had carpets cleaned, this was about the
only thing that went as planned. I took the car in for an oil change and
inspection and walk out with $1800 bill. Monday before the contest I had to
take off from work to replace the well pump that failed Sunday morning in
the middle of a load of wash, a $1500 bill for that one. Plus the dog's
electronic collar died, the light over the kitchen sink died, the bear
revisited the sw beverage termination, the wind from one of those storms
broke some trees and one day I had to drive around through 3 other towns to
get home, a tree came done on some of the 80m 4-square radials, a roofing
filter died, one of the logging computers refused to start the 2nd di, WHAT
ELSE COULD GO WRONG!?!?! Another hurricane during the contest maybe?? A
power failure during the contest like 2 years ago? How about 48 hours of
100% humidity, almost no wind, and 2 box fans going just to keep the
temperature in the shack under 80 degrees. It felt more like a summer
contest than the end of September.
We did have a nice turnout of operators.... Everyone showed up when promised
and was enthusiastic, which definitely helps. The crew included 4 operators
who were only in their 2nd rtty contest, 3 who were in their first rtty
contest... so 7 out of 11 ops were new to rtty contesting. So lots of
training and coaching was going on all weekend. Two operators were here for
the first time ever, so had to learn antennas and rotors as well as fit into
the m/m operation. KC2PNE and KC2PNN drove 4.5 hours to come and try out
m/m contesting, they are a pair of interested young contesters who did a
great job learning the new mode and helping out... and by Sunday morning
took turns running 20m just like pros. And another first I think, when
K1SFA sat down I think that was the first time I have had 2 women operators
in one weekend.
We also had visits from a neighbor, one of the operator's father who used to
be a ham, and couple who literally walked in off the street to see what was
going on. Anyone who has been here knows that is a LONG walk.
Except for 10m that came up 4 qso's short of last year, every other band
exceeded last year's results nicely. It was rather annoying to hear a
couple Italians on 10m and not being able to get their attention, the same
with an ea8. They were printing fine and running Europe, so just couldn't
get them to listen south west for the backscatter path. But the low bands
more than made up for that with vk6 on 40m and 80m long path, lots of JA's
on 40m, and a pretty good run of JA on 20m even. There was just a bit of
rain static Sunday, but the Beverages and low Yagi's seemed to do their job
and it didn't slow us down much.

Another great effort by the NCCC to get the counties covered and the activity
high. Despite bad conditions- N6O was the only station heard/worked on 15M on
Sat, and the deep QSB on 20M took a number of QSOs out of my log after I had
the call but not the report- it was another successful CQP.
W6OAT/m was supposed to be starting in Sierra county; if he did, I never heard
him nor could find him. At 2019Z, the first 57 counties were in the log;
Sierra county, the last one, wasn't in the log until 0048Z, so what looked like
my fastest sweep ever took 8 hrs 48 minutes. Not sure if that will hold up or
not.
Top QSO producers:
K6AQL/m 10
W6YI 10
N6O 9
W6YX,K6NA,K6VO 8
W6UE,K6AM,K6EZ,N6A,N6HC,W6XU 7
I was able to work 7 QSOs on 160M, and I heard N6TV, W6PH, and another 5 or 6
Ca stations that couldn't hear me. N6O was also plainly audible on 160M SSB,
but couldn't hear me. 15M was a big disappointment; it was open much better
than the activity level on Sunday. W6YI was 20 over; many others were S9. If
more had migrated to 15M, it would have helped the score. As it was, all day
Sunday only added 28K to my score!
Thanks to everyone for the Qs, and a special thanks to Dave K1TTT for the use
of his great station.
Dennis W1UE
First of all I want to thank Dave, K1TTT for
allowing me to use his super Station. It takes me about 4 hours to drive
to Dave's house located in Peru, Massachusetts and I never felt sorry about
those trips!
Not sure though when (if ever) I will be able to beat Mike,
K4GMH. Maybe last year, Mike? Especially if you will not participate?
:) Speaking about North American stations - Mike is a real
Leader.
Conditions I think were better than expected, especially on 20
and 40 meters. Even 15 meters were opened in the mornings. Bands were
crowded, if you lose the frequency, it was really hard to fing a free spot
later.
I think that activity was almost the same as during CQ WW RTTY in
September. Sending and receiving QTC's is a fun and as usual some stations
were confused.
Please read AA5AU web page. Don explains step by step how
to deal with QTC's. I counted about 6-7 stations out of ten which were
sending or receiving QTC's and other 3-4 hams objected to do so.
Too
bad, that 10 meters is still dead. I managed to work two stations on
10 meters on Sunday-N1BAA and ZX2B.
I beleive that WAE
RTTY Contest is becoming more and more popular with every year and I would
like to thank the management of this Contest for their hard work and of
course all stations who called me and answered my calls.
